Helping addicts identify and neutralize the cues of
triggers they developed while they were addicted. |

mechanisms - An unconscious way of dealing
with difficult situations. |
|
delirium
tremens (DT's) - Dt's are the condition that
often occurs when a person abruptly stops using alcohol
and / or drugs after prolonged heavy use. |

delusion
- The ability to fool oneself as no one else could.
|
|
demerol
- Trade name for a drug known as Pethadine, an opioid
analgesic drug that is fast acting and is used to alleviate
moderate to severe pain. |

denial
- Psychological defense mechanism in which confrontation
with a personal problem or with reality is avoided by
denying the existence of the problem or reality. |

dependence
- Refers to a physical state where when one stops using
a drug or alcohol, withdrawal occurs. |
|
depression
- State of sadness marked by inactivity and inability
to concentrate: reduction of the functional activity
of the body. |
|
detox
- The process of drug withdrawal in which the body is
allowed to rid itself of the chemical effects of the
drug in the bloodstream. |

dextroamphetamine
- Potent form of amphetamine, marketed under the brand
name Dexedrine. |
| dime bag -
Slang for a $10.00 quantity of a narcotic substance. |

discharge
- Discharge is the formal termination of service, generally
when treatment has been completed or through administrative
authority. |

discontentment
- State of unhappiness or unease. |
|
dopamine
- A naturally occurring chemical that helps to cause
feelings of pleasure in the brain. Opioid agonists stimulate
dopamine activity. |

dose
- A 'dose' is the quantity of a drug which is required
to achieve the desired effect that the drug produces. |
|
downers
- Street slang for barbiturates, minor tranquilizers,
and related depressants. |

drug
- A drug is a substance other than food that is taken
to obtain a desired effect on the mind or body. |

addict - 1. Someone who is psychologically
dependent on a drug. 2. A person physically addicted
to narcotics. |
Drug
Cowboy - Street slang for a drug smuggler usually
from the southwest part of the U.S. |
drug
court - A special court given the responsibility
of select felony and misdemeanor cases involving non-violent
drug-offenders. The program includes frequent random
drug testing, probation, drug treatment counseling,
educational and vocational opportunities, and the use
of sanctions and incentives. |

paraphernalia - Various pieces of equipment
that drug addicts use to consume narcotics. Pipes, bongs,
syringes, rolling papers, straws, etc. |

testing - A drug test is commonly a technical
examination of urine samples to determine the presence
or absence of specified drugs or their metabolized traces.

treatment - Residential drug treatment can
be broadly divided into two camps: 12 step programs
or Therapeutic Communities. 12 step programs have the
advantage of coming with an instant social support network
though some find the spiritual context not to their
taste. In the UK drug treatment is generally moving
towards a more integrated approach with rehabs offering
a variety of approaches. |

- A long story, told at a meeting, that concentrates
on the days of the speaker's active addiction, rather
than on recovery. |

dry
drunk - Term generally used to describe someone
who has stopped drinking, but still demonstrates the
same alcoholic behaviors and attitudes. |

dual-diagnosis
- A co-occurring disorder that can drive an active addiction
to continue indefinitely. The drinking or using is merely
a symptom of an underlying psychological issue. |
| dub - Slang
for a $20.00 quantity of a narcotic substance. |

DUI/DWI
- Drunken driving is also known as driving under the
influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI). |
DXM
- Dissociative drug (dextromorphan hydrobromide)
found in cough medicine that can produce intense hallucinations
and out of body experiences with high doses. |
