- The process of teaching the skills needed for successful
living. |

- A depressant drug of the benzodiazepine family used
to induce sleep.

halfway
house - Sometimes cxalled sober living homes,
a residence for those who have completed treatment at
a rehabilitation facility but are not yet ready to return
to their community. They need daily support to assist
them in the restructuring of their lives. |

hallucination
- Perception of objects or experience of sensations
with no real external cause. Can be auditory, visual,
etc. |

hallucinogens
- A class of drugs producing distortions in perception
and body image at moderate doses. |

hangover
- Unpleasant physical effects following the heavy use
of alcohol, which can include headache, queasy stomach,
sensitivity to noise and motion along with generalized
aches, pains, thirst, nausea, fatigue, sweating and
tremors. |

harm
reduction - Any policy, approach or program
that is directed toward reducing the harm or risk of
harm associated with abuse of alcohol and other drugs
without necessarily requiring abstinence. |

hashish
- A drug containing the resin of cannabis flowers. The
THC concentration ranges from approximately 8 to 14
percent. |

oil - A drug produced by boiling hashish, leaving
a potent psychoactive residue. The THC concentration
ranges from approximately 15 to 60 percent. |

hepatitis
c - A virus that causes liver disease. HCV
is spread by contact with the blood of an infected person.
HCV is the United States' most common blood-borne disease,
infecting at least 2 out of every 100 people. |

heroin
- A chemical derivative of morphine. It is approximately
three times as potent as morphine and a major drug of
abuse. |

hitting
bottom - The time when an active alcoholic
reaches an absolute low point, and becomes willing to
consider recovery as a solution. |

homeless
- A person who lives on the street or in a shelter for
the homeless. |
|
hopelessness
- Despair. The belief that nothing good or worthwhile
exists. |
|
humility
- The state or quality of being free from pride and
arrogance. Teachable. |
|
hypnotic
- Any of a group of central nervous system depressants
with the capacity to induce sleep. Major classes of
sedatives/hypnotics include the benzodiazepines and
barbiturates. |
