in the alley - Politically incorrect police
term for a dead "Jane Doe" found in alley
or dumpster. Usually a victim of rape, murder and/or
drug overdoze. |
| score - Street
slang for locating and purchasing narcotic substances. |
screening - Involves an interview in which a counselor assesses
an individual for the purpose of determining chemical
dependency and explaining treatment options. |
seconal - A depressant drug of the barbiturate family that induces
sleep. |
sedative - Any of a group of central nervous system depressants
with the capacity of relieving anxiety and inducing
calmness. Major classes of sedatives/hypnotics include
the benzodiazepines and barbiturates |
self-esteem - How we feel about ourselves when we have self-worth. |
self-help
group - Group of individuals with similar problems
that meets for the purpose of providing support and
information to each other and for mutual problem solving;
12-step programs are examples of self-help groups. |
selfishness,
self-centeredness - Placing one’s self
and one’s needs above everything else, obviously
at the expense of others. |
seratonin - A neurotransmitter that has been implicated in states
of consciousness, mood, depression and anxiety. |
serenity - Restoration to good health or a useful life, through
support, therapy and/or education. The process of quitting
drinking or substance abuse and learning how to remain
abstinent. A restoration to sanity. |
service
work - Participation in carrying the message
of recovery. |
shortcomings - Human characteristics, which fall short of the societal
norm. |
side
effects - Secondary effects, usually undesirable,
of a drug or therapy or behavior. |
sixteenth - Street slang for a quantity of narcotics
weighing 1/16 of an ounce or 1.75 grams. |
skeet - Street slang used by junkies and hypes for
syringe. "Wanna go shoot some skeet?" |
sinsemilla -A form of marijuana obtained from the un pollinated
or seedless portion of the cannabis plant. It has a
higher THC concentration than regular marijuana, as
high as 6 percent. |
sketch
- Bizarre behavior associated with methamphetamine
use characterized by excessively fixating on objects
or ideas. |
snorting - Ingesting some powdered drugs through the nose. |
sober - Habitually abstemious in the use of alcoholic liquors
or drugs |
sobriety - 1. Habitual soberness or temperance as to the use
of spirituous liquors; as, a man of sobriety. 2. Habitual
freedom from enthusiasm, inordinate passion, or overheated
imagination; calmness; coolness; gravity; seriousness;
as, the sobriety of riper years. 3. State of mental
clarity obtained through abstinence from alcohol and
other drugs. |
social
model - A modality of treatment known as the
recovery process characterized by lifelong commitment
to life style changes to enable an individual to develop
a constructive, productive and meaningful sober way
of life that fulfills their potential; generally accomplished
in a community based program by learning through "doing
and experiencing" with positive role models. |
solution - A correct answer that solves a problem. |
| space balling - Sprinkling
the drug PCP on crack cocaine before smoking it. |
speed
ball - Street slang meaning to inject a combination
of heroin and cocaine. |
spiritual - From the Latin word for "breath": pertaining
to the moral life or welfare of the soul, the real breath
of life. |
spiritual
awakening - A newfound clarity of vision about
whom you are, how you got here, and where you could
go. |
sponsor - An individual in a Twelve Step program who undertakes
to guide and serve as mentor to another group member.
Participating as a sponsor is part of the Twelve Step
program. |
steroids - A broad class of substances. In terms of steroid abuse,
it refers to Anabolic Steroids, a class of natural and
synthetic steroid hormones that promote cell growth
and division, resulting in growth of muscle tissue and
sometimes bone size and strength. |
stigma - Something that takes away from the character or reputation
of a person or group; a symbol of disgrace. |
stimulant - In reference to the central nervous system (CNS),
any agent that activates, enhances, or increases neural
activity; also called psycho stimulants or CNS stimulants.
Included are amphetamine-type stimulants, cocaine, caffeine,
nicotine, etc. Other drugs have stimulant actions which
are not their primary effect but which may be manifest
in high doses or after chronic use. |
stoned - Term used to describe feeling the effects of drugs,
particularly cannabis. |
Suboxone
- Recently approved medication that has been
successful in eliminating severe withdrawal symptoms
that occur during opiate detox. |
| Stop - A semi-synthetic narcotic named for its' stop sign shape. |

out - Street slang for physically addicted
to a narcotic substance, usually and opiate (heroin,
morphine, etc. |

abuse - The consuming of alcohol or other drugs
at dosages that place a person's social, economic, psychological
and physical welfare in potential hazard, or endanger
public health, morals, safety or welfare, or a combination
thereof. Also called chemical dependency. |
support
group - A group of other recovering peers (12-step
program home group, staff from rehab center, other residents
living in a sober living home, etc.) an addict can contact
for support when things aren't going well or he's got
a difficult decission to make. |
suppression - A defense mechanism in which unacceptable or uncomfortable
feelings, ideas, or impulses are deliberately avoided. |
symptomatic
drinking - A pattern of alcohol consumption
aimed at reducing stress and anxiety. |
syndrome - All the signs and symptoms associated with
a disease. |
synthetic
opiates - Man-made drugs unrelated to morphine
that produce similar opiate-like effects. |
