- Involves an interview in which a counselor assesses
an individual for the purpose of determining chemical
dependency and explaining treatment options. |

- A depressant drug of the barbiturate family that induces
sleep. |

sedative
- Any of a group of central nervous system depressants
with the capacity of relieving anxiety and inducing
calmness. Major classes of sedatives/hypnotics include
the benzodiazepines and barbiturates |

- How we feel about ourselves when we have self-worth.

group - Group of individuals with similar problems
that meets for the purpose of providing support and
information to each other and for mutual problem solving;
12-step programs are examples of self-help groups. |

self-centeredness - Placing one’s self
and one’s needs above everything else, obviously
at the expense of others. |

- A neurotransmitter that has been implicated in states
of consciousness, mood, depression and anxiety. |

serenity
- Restoration to good health or a useful life, through
support, therapy and/or education. The process of quitting
drinking or substance abuse and learning how to remain
abstinent. A restoration to sanity. |

work - Participation in carrying the message
of recovery. |
|
shortcomings
- Human characteristics, which fall short of the societal
norm. |
|
side
effects - Secondary effects, usually undesirable,
of a drug or therapy or behavior. |
|
sinsemilla
-A form of marijuana obtained from the unpollinated
or seedless portion of the cannabis plant. It has a
higher THC concentration than regular marijuana, as
high as 6 percent. |

snorting
- Ingesting some powdered drugs through the nose. |
|
sober
- Habitually abstemious in the use of alcoholic liquors
or drugs |

sobriety
1. Habitual soberness or temperance as to the use of
spirituous liquors; as, a man of sobriety. 2. Habitual
freedom from enthusiasm, inordinate passion, or overheated
imagination; calmness; coolness; gravity; seriousness;
as, the sobriety of riper years. 3. State of mental
clarity obtained through abstinence from alcohol and
other drugs. |

model - A modality of treatment known as the
recovery process characterized by lifelong commitment
to life style changes to enable an individual to develop
a constructive, productive and meaningful sober way
of life that fulfills their potential; generally accomplished
in a community based program by learning through "doing
and experiencing" with positive role models. |

solution
- A correct answer that solves a problem. |

spiritual
- From the Latin word for "breath": pertaining
to the moral life or welfare of the soul, the real breath
of life. |

spiritual
awakening - A newfound clarity of vision about
whom you are, how you got here, and where you could
go. |

sponsor
- An individual in a Twelve Step program who undertakes
to guide and serve as mentor to another group member.
Participating as a sponsor is part of the Twelve Step
program. |

steroids
- A broad class of substances. In terms of steroid abuse,
it refers to Anabolic Steroids, a class of natural and
synthetic steroid hormones that promote cell growth
and division, resulting in growth of muscle tissue and
sometimes bone size and strength. |

stigma
- Something that takes away from the character or reputation
of a person or group; a symbol of disgrace. |
|
stimulant
- In reference to the central nervous system (CNS),
any agent that activates, enhances, or increases neural
activity; also called psychostimulants or CNS stimulants.
Included are amphetamine-type stimulants, cocaine, caffeine,
nicotine, etc.. Other drugs have stimulant actions which
are not their primary effect but which may be manifest
in high doses or after chronic use. |

- Term used to describe feeling the effects of drugs,
particularly cannabis. |

substance
abuse - The consuming of alcohol or other drugs
at dosages that place a person's social, economic, psychological
and physical welfare in potential hazard, or endanger
public health, morals, safety or welfare, or a combination
thereof. Also called chemical dependency. |

suppression
- A defense mechanism in which unacceptable or uncomfortable
feelings, ideas, or impulses are deliberately avoided.

symptomatic
drinking - A pattern of alcohol consumption
aimed at reducing stress and anxiety. |

syndrome
- All the signs and symptoms associated with
a disease. |
|
synthetic
opiates - Man-made drugs unrelated to morphine
that produce opiate-like effects. |
