Nebraska Seeks Stricter Marijuana Penalties
April 18, 2008

News Summary

Fines and penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana in Nebraska would be strengthened if new legislation is signed into law, Midlands News Service reported April 16.

The bill, filed by State Sen. Russ Karpisek, would increase fines for possession of an ounce or less of marijuana to $300 -- up from $100 -- with second and third offenses increasing to $400 and $500, respectively.

Penalties for possession of more than an ounce but less than a pound of marijuana would increase to a maximum of three months in jail and a $500 fine, up from seven days in jail and a $500 fine. The penalties apply to both minors and adults.

The Nebraska Crime Commission reports 7,416 citations and arrests for possession, sale and manufacturing of marijuana in 2006.
